Fascias, soffits, and gutters are the unsung heroes of your home's exterior. They protect your roof structure, manage water runoff, and frame your home's appearance. When they're dirty, your whole home looks neglected. Here's how to clean them properly.

Why Fascias and Soffits Get Dirty

Positioned under the roofline, fascias and soffits catch everything that runs off your roof: dirt, algae, mould spores, bird droppings, and atmospheric pollution. Over time, this buildup turns white UPVC grey, green, or black, making your home look decades older than it is.

DIY Cleaning Methods

For Light Dirt

Mix warm water with mild washing-up liquid. Use a soft-bristled brush on an extension pole to reach upper areas. Work in sections, rinse with a garden hose, and avoid pressure washers which can force water behind the UPVC. Never use abrasive cleaners or metal brushes—they permanently scratch UPVC.

For Mould and Algae

Use a UPVC-specific cleaner or a mixture of water and white vinegar (50/50). Apply, let sit for 10 minutes, then scrub gently. For persistent growth, a specialized biocide may be needed. Always test cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area first.

What NOT to Do

When to Call Professionals

If your roofline hasn't been cleaned in years, the growth is thick and black, or your home has two or more storeys, call PureShine Harrogate. We use pure water fed pole systems with specialized brushes that clean UPVC without chemicals or pressure. Our reach extends to 70 feet, so we clean everything safely from ground level. The pure water rinse leaves no residue, and results last months longer than DIY methods.

Prevention Tips

Annual professional cleaning prevents permanent staining and extends the life of your UPVC components. Trim overhanging branches to reduce organic debris. Ensure gutters are clear so water doesn't overflow onto fascias. Consider UPVC restorer products for older, faded components.
